Procurement managers get asked a lot of material questions that sound simple but are not. 'Is Shin-Etsu a rubber company?' 'What is TPU silicone?' 'Should we use silicone or polyurethane?' I have been sourcing polymers, elastomers, and silicone-based materials at a 240-person rubber and plastics manufacturer for six years. We spend roughly $1.9M a year on material purchases, and I have made enough mistakes to know that terminology matters more than most buyers realize.
1. Who exactly is Shin-Etsu Silicones?
Shin-Etsu Silicones is the silicone business arm of Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., a Japanese specialty chemical manufacturer. The company makes the upstream monomers and silanes, then converts them into silicone fluids, gum, resins, and elastomers. When you search for 'shin-etsu silicones company,' you are likely looking at the American subsidiary, Shin-Etsu Silicones of America, which handles sales and technical support in North America. According to Shin-Etsu Chemical's corporate website (shinetsu.co.jp), silicones are one of its core business segments.
From a purchasing standpoint, the important thing is vertical integration. Because they control a large part of the chain from silicon metal reaction through final compounding, supply can be more stable. I say 'can' because I do not have visibility into every plant. But in six years of buying silicone grades, the brand's supply consistency has been solid. That stability is worth something, but it is not worth paying a premium for if your application does not need it.
2. Is Shin-Etsu a rubber company?
Not exactly. It is a specialty chemical company with the word 'rubber' sometimes appearing in product categories. Silicone rubber is a major product line: the company sells high-consistency rubber (HCR) and liquid silicone rubber (LSR) as raw materials, and group companies turn those into seals, gaskets, and other components.
The 'rubber company' label comes from the fact that so many buyers encounter Shin-Etsu through a rubber part. The label does not help you order. You need to know which form you want: raw silicone polymer, uncured rubber compound, or a fabricated part. More than once, purchase requests for 'Shin-Etsu silicone' came through where the factory needed LSR and the buyer asked a molder for finished parts, or vice versa. Define the form first.
3. What is Shin-Etsu Polymer?
Shin-Etsu Polymer Co., Ltd. is a group company that processes silicone and other polymers into end-use components. It makes things like silicone keypads, seals, rollers, cosmetic applicators, and various molded parts. For procurement, 'Shin-Etsu polymer' is one of those terms that causes problems because it is too generic. I am guilty of using it as shorthand on a BOM myself.
It cost us when a supplier interpreted it as PVC. We did not have a formal material-naming process back then. Now we require a material family, a durometer range, and a part form on every RFQ. It sounds basic, but a vague description usually leads to a vague quote.
4. Silicone polyurethane: What is the difference, and why does it keep showing up on datasheets?
Let us get the basic chemistry out of the way. Silicone has a silicon-oxygen backbone; polyurethane is built from isocyanates and polyols. The two materials perform differently in heat, tear, and flexibility. Silicone is usually better for continuous heat, UV exposure, and long-term aging. Polyurethane is usually stronger against abrasion and tearing, and it is often less expensive per unit volume.
The phrase 'silicone polyurethane' is not one material. It can be a silicone-modified polyurethane, a physical blend, or a multi-layer laminate. I almost approved a quote for a 'silicone polyurethane' seal because the price looked great. It turned out to be a silicone-coated PU foam. Fine for a gasket, wrong for a high-heat manifold. We changed our process after that: if a datasheet does not say exactly how the material is modified or layered, we ask for the chemical family, durometer, and heat aging data before comparing prices.
5. What is TPU silicone?
TPU is thermoplastic polyurethane. 'TPU silicone' is not a standard material name. In our purchasing records, it is one of these:
- TPU film coated with silicone
- Silicone bonded to a TPU substrate
- A thermoplastic silicone vulcanizate (TPSiV) - an injection-moldable blend that feels a lot like rubber
Each one has different tooling requirements, temperature limits, and costs. If a supplier sends you a quote for 'TPU silicone,' ask for the exact trade name and product class. I am not sure why the industry allows this phrase to float around. My best guess is that sales teams put 'silicone' on anything to make it sound more premium. The result is confusion and, in our case, one expensive rework.
In 2024, a quote for silicone-coated TPU film was used to prototype a part that needed 180°C service. The film did not last a day. The quote was $250; the rework and delay cost about $1,900. I still kick myself for not asking for heat-aging data before we approved the prototype. If I had caught the TPU substrate issue, we would have missed the delay. The surprise was not the failure. It was that the quote was technically accurate: 'TPU silicone' can mean exactly what was sent.
6. How do I compare a Shin-Etsu quote against lower-priced options?
Look, I am not saying the most expensive quote is always the right one. But after comparing vendors for six years, I have learned that the lowest unit price rarely wins on total cost (TCO). Here is the thing: molders, distributors, and material suppliers all hide different costs in different places. Some quote raw material only. Others include post-curing and flash removal. Some charge tooling separately. A $0.08 silicone part can cost you $0.14 once you add setup, scrap, and inspection.
In 2023, we audited our materials spend and found that most budget overruns did not come from price increases. They came from rework caused by inconsistent material performance. We now use the same checklist for every silicone order: durometer, compression set, tensile strength, heat aging, lot traceability, and certification. If a cheaper grade passes the same tests, I will buy it. If it does not pass, it is not cheaper. It is a different commodity.
