What does not differ is the material still has to match the equipment: viscosity, working time, cure profile, and required temperature. If possible, get a process sample and run it under the actual conditions. Hesitation phrases like 'we'll figure it out' should be a stop sign. You don't need to know every detail of the chemistry. You need to know the parameters that affect your production line.

I have mixed feelings about generic alternatives. On one hand, some are perfectly good and save money. On the other hand, a substitution can change a tested manufacturing process in ways you won't see until failure. For production, I side with the specified product and documented change control.

Step 5: Inspect Incoming Goods Like a Quality Auditor, Not a Receiver

Because the certification is tied to a specific formulation, not to a brand. Step 7: Know How to Remove Mold From Silicone—and When Not To

The short answer for molded silicone parts: remove loose dirt with a soft brush, wash with warm water and mild dish soap, rinse completely, then dry fully. Citrus-based solvents, abrasive scrubbers, and strong degreasers can damage a silicone surface even when the product feels fine at first. And mold growth usually needs more than silicone; it needs organic soil on the surface and moisture. Clean the surface, fix the moisture problem, and the mold usually stops coming back.

If the item is a cracked old silicone sealant bead, don't spend too much time cleaning it. Cut out the old seal, clean the surface, and replace it. Cleaning an intact bead is one thing; cleaning a seal that has already lost adhesion is wasted effort.

For design-level questions, the common reference is ASTM G21, 'Standard Practice for Determining Resistance of Synthetic Polymeric Materials to Fungi' (ASTM International, astm.org). If resistance to mold growth is a performance requirement, ask the material supplier for that kind of data instead of relying on marketing phrases.

A lot of silicone procurement advice starts with price or brand. Mine starts with checks. The product code, the application, the distributor, the process, the incoming inspection, the certification, and the maintenance question—those are the points that cost me money when I skipped them.

I don't have hard data on how many mistakes this checklist has prevented. What I can say anecdotally is that in the past 18 months, we've caught 47 potential problems before they became production delays. Not every one was a real issue. Every one was worth checking.
