Silicone usually wins when the part has to handle high heat, steam sterilization, UV exposure, long-term compression, or chemicals that would soften or stain TPU. TPU wins when the part has to survive impacts, abrasion, oil, fuel, and tearing.
The most frustrating part of the public conversation is that people assume TPU means cheap and silicone means premium. It's not that clean. Silicone can tear if it gets snagged; TPU can stiffen, yellow, or soften in the wrong environment. The answer for your case comes from actual service conditions, not from a material name.
Why do silicone products look more expensive than TPU?
Because they often are more expensive, at least on the purchase order. Silicone raw material costs more, and the processing steps for molded silicone products, including temperature control, curing, cleaning, and post-curing, can add cost that a standard TPU injection run doesn't have.

When a spec asks for shin etsu silicones, it usually means the buyer wants traceable, consistent raw silicone material. Shin-Etsu is one of the world's largest integrated silicone producers; it starts upstream at silicon metal and makes silicone rubber grades used by molders. That vertical integration matters in automotive, medical, and electronics because the material has to behave the same from batch to batch.
You don't need to buy a branded case. A case can start as Shin-Etsu LSR or high-consistency silicone rubber, get molded by a custom shop, and still be a private-label product. The specification is about material quality, not consumer branding.
What do shin-etsu silicone distributors actually do?
For most custom case projects, you won't buy silicone direct from a giant producer in truckload volumes. Authorized shin-etsu silicone distributors are the practical channel. They stock grades, sell smaller quantities, provide technical guidance, and can pull up the material certificate when a customer asks.
In December 2024, I watched a distributor locate 50 kg of liquid silicone rubber and deliver it in 24 hours with the right certificate. Direct purchasing could not have done that on a Friday. In 2023, a client tried to run silicone in an existing TPU tool to save money. It looked close enough, but the differences in fill behavior and heat caused flash and rework. The odds caught up. The mold needed modifications anyway, and the schedule took a hit. When is TPU clearly better than silicone?

Tooling and process validation can't always be rushed safely. More often than not, the bottleneck is not the truck; it's waiting for a decision on hardness, color, or gate location.
I once paid almost $700 in expedited freight to move silicone material from a distributor to a molder. On paper it felt ridiculous. But the project would have missed a customer sampling window, and that cost would have dwarfed the freight. If a supplier is asking for a rush fee, ask what it covers. Part of me wants to negotiate every fee, but I also know that a real rush disrupts the factory.
What hidden costs should you check before choosing a case material?
Before you finalize the quote, compare more than unit price. Use a TCO-style checklist:
- Tooling design and any modifications for a silicone tool
- Sampling and approval rounds
- Color matching and material certification
- Post-curing, cleaning, and secondary operations
- Packaging and shipping method
- Compliance documentation or testing
The lower quote is only lower if the scope is identical. I've seen a case where one quote excluded flammability testing and another included it.
