The call came in at 1:47 on a Tuesday.

A buyer needed silicone foam gaskets for a sealed electronics enclosure. The drawing said “silicone foam, 3 mm, 40 Shore 00.” The purchase order said “polyurethane foam.” The parts had to ship by Thursday.

That is how I learned how often these two materials get mixed up—and how much it matters when you are already behind.

The Surface Problem: A Spec That Disagrees With Itself

I coordinate urgent material orders for industrial manufacturers. That means I spend a lot of time triaging requests that are already late. In my role, material mismatches are one of the most common reasons I get called in the first place.

This mismatch was not just a typo. Polyurethane and silicone are both soft, resilient, and available in sheets. On a screen, they look similar. In a catalog, they are often listed under the same “elastomers” category. But they are not interchangeable.

Is Silicone Polyurethane? The Short Answer Is No

Silicone is a synthetic polymer with a silicon-oxygen backbone. Polyurethane is built from organic isocyanates and polyols. That is not just chemistry trivia. It changes how the material behaves in real-world conditions.

  • Temperature: Silicone remains flexible at cold temperatures and handles continuous heat better than most polyurethanes.
  • Compression set: Silicone tends to recover better after being compressed, which is why silicone foam gaskets hold up in sealed enclosures.
  • Chemical resistance: Polyurethane generally handles fuel, oil, and abrasion better than silicone.
  • Outgassing: Each material has a different outgassing profile, and that can decide whether a gasket is safe in an electronics assembly.

If the drawing says silicone, and the application sees heat, UV, weather, or needs low compression set, do not trade it for polyurethane. If the application sees oil, fuel, or heavy abrasion, silicone may not be the right answer either.

The Deeper Cause: “Silicone” Is a Product Family, Not a Formula

When I first started sourcing gaskets, I assumed a foam is a foam. If it was the right thickness, the right density, and closed-cell, I thought it would work. I was wrong.

Search for “silicone” online and you will see silicone foam gaskets, bakeware, medical tubing, and silicone stroker products. All of those use silicone chemistry, but they are not the same formulation. Fillers, catalysts, densities, and cure systems change performance completely.

That is why a datasheet matters more than a generic label. A silicone foam gasket for an outdoor cabinet is not the same as a silicone phone case or a silicone oven mat. The material family is shared. The specification is not.

What That Mix-Up Costs

In March 2024, a customer called needing replacement silicone foam gaskets for a battery cabinet. Their supplier quoted seven business days. The customer needed the cabinet commissioned at the end of the week.

We found a converter with sheet stock and waterjet capability, paid $1,200 in rush fees on top of a $4,800 base order, and delivered by Friday night. The customer’s alternative was a $20,000 penalty for missing a project milestone.

The wrong material would have been worse. A polyurethane gasket in a silicone application can harden, take a permanent set, and leak under vibration. A silicone gasket in a polyurethane application can tear or swell when it contacts oil.

The part itself might only cost $50. The emergency logistics, service call, and lost trust can cost ten times that. In one case, a customer paid $8,000 to replace a $200 seal that had been made from the wrong polymer. That is the real price of the silicone versus polyurethane confusion.

What I Look For in Shin-Etsu Silicone News

When I am checking materials, I look for suppliers that document what they make. This is not a pitch for one brand. There are good silicone suppliers in the market, and I have worked with regional converters who do excellent work. But in a rush situation, traceability and published specs are part of reliability. If I cannot find a datasheet, I cannot confirm the material. And if I cannot confirm the material, I cannot rush it out the door safely.

What I Would Do Differently, and Still Do

The conventional wisdom is that part numbers and datasheets are enough. In practice, I found that a datasheet can tell you a lot, but it does not tell you what will happen after a year of heat, UV, and vibration.

  1. Confirm the material family, not just the shape. If the drawing says silicone foam, do not accept “foam” as a substitute.
  2. Ask for a specification. Density, compression set, durometer, and flame rating matter. Common references include ASTM D1056 for cellular rubber and UL 94 for flame behavior.
  3. Know the application. Heat and weather lean silicone. Oil and fuel lean polyurethane.
  4. Keep a known-good sample. It beats emailing cross sections at midnight.

This was accurate as of March 2025. Material specifications, certifications, and available grades change. Verify current data sheets before you commit, especially if you are working from a drawing written in a different country or a different decade.

If you ask me, the best emergency order is the one you never have to place. Is silicone polyurethane? No. Are both useful? Absolutely. But “both useful” is not “the same.” Knowing that difference has saved me more hours than any rush shipping option I have ever used.
